AutoCAD/GIS Technician
Description
Under the direction of the Director of Municipal Services the AutoCAD/GIS Technician is responsible for the administration and development of all aspects of the town’s geographic information system in cooperation with the system provider. The AutoCAD/GIS Technician will coordinate and identify resources, and establish project objectives, timelines, and milestones. This position works independently and is responsible for the daily maintenance, creation, and data entry in the GIS system and for the on-going conversion and organization of data from hard copy maps and CAD to CAD/GIS. The AutoCAD/GIS Technician will be required to conduct field work data collection, gather data from various sources for GIS analysis and enter such data into the town’s GIS system. This individual will also be required to assist various departments with the development and management of the website, social media, new computer applications and programs, and GIS projects. Including developing procedure and policy documents, reports, and hard copy maps for use across all departments and the public.
Completion of a Diploma, degree or certificate in Geographic Information system technology/applications or Geomatics from a recognized post-secondary institution. Individuals must have knowledge and skill in the operation of GIS equipment, including computer hardware, computer software, and GPS. Applicants with related work and education experience will also be considered.
List of Duties
· Responsible for on-going data entry, data conversion, and maintenance of the GIS system.
· Conduct field work/surveys, mapping research and data gathering with respect to new, modified, and existing municipal infrastructure using hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) (Trimble TerraSync, and Pathfinder office). Including downloading and entering data into CAD/GIS system and ensuring the accuracy of data collected.
· Collaborate, train, provide procedure and policy documents relating to the GIS application, GIS related projects, and IT related projects (new computer programs, website, social media, etc.) for all departments. Identifying gaps in user knowledge and providing training opportunities to address problem areas.
· Create maps, plans, drawings, presentation materials, documents, databases, and other digital products utilizing GIS knowledge and skills.
· Assisting and participating in asset management solutions to the City’s infrastructure, corporate assets and real property data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technology.
· Work with other local GIS stakeholders (ie gov’t, learning institutions, etc) in comparing and sharing data.
· Other related duties as required
· Produce live events for the Town of Stephenville via Microsoft Teams
· Aid in new computer applications/program research and testing for the Town
· Social media management
· Website design and maintenance (SquareSpace, HTML)
Requirements
· Working knowledge of AutoCAD (Map 3D), QGIS, ArcGIS, Trimble Terrasync, Pathfinder Office, ArcGIS Online, Microsoft suite is required.
· Working knowledge of Python and PyQIS computer programming language an asset.
· Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
· Experience working in a municipal environment and with the public is an asset.
· Ability to work well independently and with others.
· Comfortable and able to learn new technologies and computer applications, software, and programs quickly.
· Strong organizational and project management skills
· A GISP certificate would be considered an asset.
